Feedback on the Battenkill-Roubaix Race!

Hey just want to say thanks for a great day of racing.

Thanks to all the
people who had anything to do with the race. See ya next year.
Great Race Drake,
The marshals, the folks working registration and the people all along the race course, count me in
for 2007.
Eric
Amazing.
Nicely done. The painted arrows on the roads were very helpful. Great course. Good police
support!
I want to congratulate you again, this time through e-mail on a well run and organized race. My
three team mates and I will spread the word here in Upper Montclair about BattenKill-Roubaix
and hopeful next year we will show up with more riders. This race is a classic in the making. I
wish you much success with it in the many years to come.
Thanks again for an awesome race. I know it take time and hard work to put together a race like

Thanks for hosting such a spectacular event. We will back next year.

A human rainbow of color, an archaic two wheeled invention infused with the latest cutting edge
technology, hundreds of numbers, one number--262; my number. For today, I became a "bike
racer".
What in the hell was I thinking? As I look around I see nothing but super skinny, super fit, super
youthful racers on top end, high tech gear. Even the "old farts" look super skinny and super fit. I
have only been wearing spandex, bike shoes, and these colorful jerseys less than a year myself.
I am 47 years old so I am starting in the "Masters group". In comparison to this group, the few
miles I have in my legs makes me feel like a master of nothing. I hear this course is tough (that's
a gross understatement by the way!) and as we roll out at the 2 mile mark I notice we are running
about 27 mph. What did I get myself into! The first hill ended all those comparisons though...I
don't think I ever saw any of those individuals again.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines "race" as - to compete against in a contest of speed. I
am quite sure that many or most of the people that showed up today "beat me in the contest of

speed". But I like to think of it this way: I beat "everybody" today, who for whatever reason
signed up but didn't show up. I beat everybody who thought about racing but said nah, and didn't
even bother to register. And I certainly beat most of modern America who were too busy driving
to the mall or Home Depot in their SUV smoking cigarettes and talking on their cell phones.
...but I digress, for you see I truly wasn't competing today with anyone that was or wasn't there.
Today I was competing with two psychological demons--fear, and the notion that as we get older
we must get slower and weaker. I woke up this morning with the worst case of butterflies ever.
Will I finish this course? Will I crash? Will the bike I built all by my self and that has never been
even checked by a bike mechanic survive such a course? How bad will I get dropped? Will I do
something stupid and ruin a "real racers" day. The second demon was way more subtle. What
are you doing here? This is not the time in life to take up such a folly. Go home and ride around
on your lawn mower and gain 2.5 to 5 lbs a year for the rest of your life. Well let me tell you, I
kicked those two opponents ass today! For I was 262; bike racer, and I finished that course and
although it wasn't the toughest thing in my life it was easily the toughest thing I have done in the
last 10 years. I am not AFRAID of that course anymore and I KNOW I am stronger, faster, and
tougher this year then I was last. Time can't be beaten...but it can be slowed down!
O.K. this is titled "thoughts and reflections", those were the thoughts, here are the reflections:
I was/am proud of my bike. It was extremely comfortable and had absolutely no mechanical
problems...maybe I should become a "bike mechanic" instead of a bike racer. Many other
"professionally built/maintained" bikes didn't fair so well.
I got dropped on virtually every hill and ran away from quite often on the flats, but NO ONE ever
passed me or even came near on the descents. I showed quite a few racer boys the fastest line
down some of the nasty dirt descents.
I never even thought about getting off and walking up a hill. I saw people doing it...I heard about
even more. I pedaled my way up every rise no matter how steep or slippery. I knew I would have
to answer to Heather if I got off the bike, I didn't want to do that.
I felt really good with my bike handling skills. There was no situation where I didn't feel that me
and the bike were one and no matter what the terrain was I felt totally in control.
I set a new personal top speed record today-- 50.7 mph. That was a RUSH!!!! Anyone that
hasn't gone over 50 on a bike might not get it, but that is as close as a human can feel to flying
without wings.
My last reflection is more of a prediction. I am going to try to do one of the crits this summer, but
other than that I think my bike racing "career" is about over. I enjoyed the "training" while it
lasted, but now I want to just get back on my bike and ride for the pure enjoyment of it. I still want
to push to go faster and I want to get better on hills but I beat my biggest two opponents today
and I don't want to give them a re-match :-)
I want to thank some folks now:
Chad, for seizing my ignorance, hyping me up and getting me to sign up for this before I knew
what I was doing
Nick, Mike, Chad, and of course Tommy boy for "training the hell out of me"
Dieter, for designing such an awesome, soul testing course
Heather for scaring the hell out of me, then building up my confidence and making sure I NEVER
walk a bike up a hill
Kevin, for teaching me how to see the fastest, easiest line through the dirt and talking me into a
titanium frame...the sexiest bike material ever made in my opinion

All those wonderful folks who sat and cheered us on...cycling IS alive and well in America thank
you very much
And finally and most importantly, my family for understanding my compulsion for all things bike.
This was perhaps the coolest race I have ever done. Great job!
Larry Towner
Race was unbelievable. See you next year!
The 12-25 and the compact cranks were the wrong decision. :) lesson
learned. I had a blast and will be back.
Take Care,
Rob
Great Race! Very hard, but a great race.
It was very well marked and organized. I will definitely be back next year.
Andrew Hackel
it was fantastic. very well organized, safe and a rare chance to take in roads and terrain
like that in a bicycle race.
well done and cheers,
kevin molloy
Thankyou for a terrific race, I really enjoyed it and I worked really
hard!!
Thanks to all who volunteered for a safe and well organised race...
Will definitely be back next year, hopefully with a few team-mates. I
was the guinea pig this year.
Your race kicks ass, mine in particular (next year i'll bring a lower
gear).
Keep up the good work.

Thanks for putting on the event!
It was much better organized than many other USCF races I've
participated in another region.
Fantastic roads and course marshaling.
What an encouragement to get back out riding some more!
Thanks for all of you efforts, you're the king.
-Brian
What an amazing race. Granted, I never race well in the spring, and today was no
exception, but it was the most fun I've ever had getting dropped. Your volunteers deserve
a HUGE pat on the back for doing an amazing job. The course marshals were extremely
attentive, making sure even lone riders made it through the intersections safely.
And the course! Even if it was all paved it would be a great course, but with all the dirt it
truely is memorable. This was the most fun I've had at a bike race in a long time. And
your information about camping in the area lead us to Battenkill Valley Outdoors and
their large cabin, where 10 of us happily stayed. Just wanted to extend our appreciation
for organizing a superb event. Great course, great volunteers, great atmosphere, and
great weather (though the latter might have been a bit of karma.) Made waiting in that
long registration line worth every minute.
Thanks again, we'll see you next year.
We'll be back! Thanks for a great race. The organization on the road was exceptionally
good.
Bob
Thanks so much for organizing such a great race. It was one of the most
challenging, fun, and well run races I've ever had the pleasure of
partaking in. Great job on the weather to... Got a chance to work on
the tan... See you next year (hopefully).
Milos
It was awesome...I haven't been in that much pain since I wrecked my
motorcycle.
This was the best course I have raced in a long time. All of us from
the CRCA/Sakonnet Technology team had so much fun! We were all saying

on the drive home that it was the best $20 we had ever spent, and how
unexcited we were to pay $35 to race in Central Park!!
The course was fun and super challenging, and it could not have been
marshalled any better.
Thanks to you and all of your volunteers for a great event...we look
forward to come back to this truly classic race next year.
Also, were can we find the results posted?
Thanks again,
Russell Kelly
CRCA/Sakonnet Technology
It was tough in the spring classic tradition but beautiful. Only one of
the stretches was "iffy"The organization seemed superb. Thanks for all
the work. Hopefully this will give me motivation to get into a little
better shape for next years race when I will be the baby of the 55 year
old group. Thanks again. You have a beautiful area out there.

It is a great event destined to become a classic.

Best course I have ever ridden on - Thanks for putting in th time to make it happen and
happenso smooth. Can't wai to come back next year.
I had a blast!
Although I missed the decisive break early and had to time trial for 40
miles I thoroughly enjoyed this race. The course was one of the
toughest I have ever done. The traffic control was outstanding! I
have to say you and your volunteer staff did a tremendous job.
Thanks very much and Happy Easter.

Nicely done.
That was the hardest, and best, race I've done yet.
See you next year!

Just wanted to thank you for a great extperience. You put on a great race. The scenery
alone was worth the trip. This was my first race experience. Can't wait for next year.
Once again, great job
Thanks again. Mark Rosenfield
FANTASIC Race!!! I will be back next year! Great course and I am confident you have the
makings of a great spring classic.
Thanks,
Ben Hughes
Dude. Awesome race for the second year in a row. Course was VERY
well marked, officials were great (i was yo-yoing around the wheel van
trying to stay with the group and they didn't interfere) and I really
liked the course change. It seemed like the town came out for the
event too. Lots of people cheering on the roads.
Congradulations on the event, and thanks again. Can't wait for next
year.

Nice job yesterday. Thanks!
great race, see you next year.

I just wanted to send you a quick note to let you know how much I enjoyed Battenkill Roubaix. It
was such a tough race and I can't imagine how much work must have gone into organizing it.
The town and volunteers were great, the scenery was beautiful (when I could see straight), and
the course was tough. I think I can speak for the Cat. 5 U-35's when I extend my sincere
appreciation for organizing such an amazing race.
Best regards,
Jonah Adley
(and yes, I do have an excuse for only finishing 16th!)
Thanks for an Epic race!!!! I also appreciate your dealing with my reg, situation. As a Race
Director of the Mt Agamenticus Time Trial, and a Director, NorEast Cycling, I understand the
effort, time, and coordination required for such an event, and I wanted to pass on that it was one
of the most challenging, yet, fun events I have done... Additionally, your volunteers on course,
and at Reg where truly fantastic. Thanks again, and I look forward to next year.
Thank you for a great event! Clearly, it was beautifully organized (even down to
weather, best day of the year so far).
Furthermore, I have a suggestion. How about a 3 day stage race. Day 1 Battenkill-
Roubaix; Day 2 Balloon Festival Race; Day 3 crit. A weekend that tough will attract
crazy pain junkies, like myself, from all over. It will be a boon for the town and can you
imagine Day 2, the big climb of the Balloon festival course on the final lap, the pain, the
intensity, now thats a weekend! Cool, huh?
Thanks again. Awesome race.
All My Best,
Andrew Cohen
[Dieter’s note – this person is crazier than I am]

I enjoyed it very much. I'll be back next year with friends! Here's my race report if you
are interested.

Thanks,
Pat
I'll be back next year.
It was hardest most fun ride I've done in a while. It was worth the
trip from Delaware. I'll be speaking its praises and warning at the
same time.
Thank all the volunteers. They did a GREAT JOB!!!
All the Best,
Ivan Solero
Thanks for putting on such a great race. The dirt was great. No crazy
down hills or lunatics in pick-ups.... My race, the 35+, was hard with
lots of tactics. If I got it right 1st & 2nd took off after the first
big hill with the women Hiroko Shimada joining them.... Good move by
her... You don't need to change a thing. See you next year.
Bill Holmes
Thank you for organizing such a great event. That was my first bike race. I have been road biking for about
9 months and that was great. I will be back next year to have my butt kicked again. Fantastic
Thanks for all your efforts.
Well done. Awesome once again!

I just wanted to thank you for providing such a great race. I finished dead last and it was a
huge test of mental and physical toughness, but I still loved it.
I guess for my first cycling race ever, it was nice just to finish such a grueling course.
However, coming from success in many other athletic fields, it was very humbling. I am
determined to train and do better in races to come. Unfortunately, my shifters and derailer
failed me again about 15 minutes before the start of the race. I wasn't able to get my chain
on the big ring.... then again, due to the insane climbs, I was using my smallest ring most
of the time anyway. haha It truely was a class act from all cyclists and volunteers
involved. It's also a great event for the local communities. I am looking forward to seeing
the continued success in the years to come.
Thank you again for a wonderful eye opening event. The professionalism and
overwhelming friendly support will not be forgotten. I look forward to fixing my bike
(completely) and getting out there again soon. Hopefully I'll see you all in June during
the Balloon Festival.
Sincerely,
Kean L. Bouplon
I had a blast. Thanks for all the hard work and imagination.
Thank you. Great race. Looking forward to doing it next year.
Just wanted to drop you a note to say that the bike race was awesome! As it was my first
I was in awe of all the beautiful bikes and the outfits people were wearing, I wasn't
expecting all that. The course itself was unbelievable. Oh my gosh it was so hard. It took
me 3 hours to get 27 miles and then I got a flat tire. I was relieved and disappointed,
mostly relieved. Unbelievable that all those riders could finish that race in a little over 2
hrs. that is intense ,they are intese people. Next year I will enjoy watching the racers
come in at the finish line and I would also like to see at what pace they attacked some of
those hills (mountains) that I found even hard to walk up while pushing a bike, lol! It

was a great experience so thank you for that and I hope that it went the way you hoped it
would. Great Job!! Have a wonderful summer.
Holly Morizio
Well organized. Very helpful and enthusiastic volunteers and course
marshals. Marshals did an excellent job in all places and it was very
safe passing through the towns.
I just wanted to send along a big THANKS for putting on such a well run and enjoyable event.
The course was awesome. Things went very smoothly and I personally had a great time. Even if
I did get dropped from the group I was riding in on the last climb!
It was an absolute blast and I can only hope you'll be back again next year for round 3, because
I know if you put this race on again, I'll be back again and so will many others. I can only see an
event like this continuing to grow.
So - on behalf of myself and on behalf of NorEast Cycling Club, thank you very much. Well
done! Hope to see you at one of the crits we are putting on this summer. (You can check them
out here www.noreastcycling.com )
Take care. Respectfully -

Incredible course1
incredible day!
well organized, Thanks much
One of the most challenging courses in New England. Great race!

Hi Folks,
I just wanted to send you a quick note of thanks. I was a participant
in the Battenkill-Roubaix Bicycle Race last weekend and wanted to let
you know how much I appreciate the town and its citizens response to
the race. The town was a very gracious host. From the police who

provided a very safe race course to the volunteers and citizens who
came out to cheer for us. It was absolutely great!
I also want to send a special thanks to the folks that opened the
school for the racers. It was great to have a regular bathroom and
showers.
I'll be back again next year.
